Ang Ku Kueh
Location: 144, Jln Padungan, 93100 Kuching, Sarawak
Artist: Leonard Siaw
Date Finished: January 2023
Background of the mural:
The mural, titled “Everlasting Shape of Joy,” was created by Sarawakian mural artist Leonard Siaw. It features Goh Bing Choo, a local traditional kueh maker from Padungan, making her famous Ang Ku Kueh (red tortoise cake).
Goh was born and raised in the Padungan area and had been making traditional pastries for many years. She came from a fourth-generation kueh-making family, with the family business, Syn Soon Huat Enterprise, continuing through her daughter.
The artist was inspired after visiting Goh's kitchen and seeing how she made the Ang Ku Kueh by hand. He wanted to capture not only her appearance but also the skill and dedication involved in this traditional craft. The mural shows Goh's aged hands, wrinkles and swollen joints, highlighting the many years of physical work behind the craft. This makes the mural feel like a tribute to her dedication rather than simply an artwork about food.
