Background of the Mural:

The Early Mercers mural portrays the pioneer textile merchants who established their businesses along India Street during the 1930s, a period when the area was recognised as one of Kuching's busiest commercial centres. At that time, India Street was well known for its vibrant trade in fabrics, textiles, clothing materials, and household goods, attracting both local residents and traders from different communities. The mural pays tribute to these early merchants whose entrepreneurial spirit and commercial activities contributed significantly to Kuching's economic growth and the development of India Street as an important trading hub.

Beyond its historical value, the mural also celebrates Kuching's rich multicultural heritage by illustrating the daily lives of early Chinese merchants, traditional textile trading practices, and the distinctive heritage shophouses that continue to define the character of the Old Bazaar.

Through its realistic depiction of everyday commerce, the artwork highlights the harmonious coexistence of diverse ethnic communities that shaped Kuching's social and cultural identity. As part of the History on the Wall Series along the Old Kuching Heritage Trail, the mural not only preserves an important chapter of the city's past but also provides visitors with a meaningful opportunity to appreciate Kuching's history, cultural diversity, and architectural heritage.
